(for whom the bells tolls)

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece

of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away

by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,

as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:

any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,

and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

인간은 누구도 섬이 아니며, 혼자서는 전체가 아니다. 누구나 대륙의 한 조각이며

본토의 한 부분이다. 흙덩이가 바닷물에 씻겨 내려가면 유럽은 그만큼 작아진다.

​어떤 높은 모래톱이 잠겨도 마찬가지. 그대의 친구들이나 그대 자신이 소유한 땅이

 잠겨도 마찬가지다. 어떤 사람의 죽음도 결국 나를 감소시킨다. 왜냐하면 나 역시

인류에 포함되어 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 누구를 위해 종이 울리는지를 알기 위해

사람을 보내지 말라. 종은 바로 그대를 위해 울린다.
